Sportfishing charters in Guanacaste

The season runs opposite the central Pacific

This is the thing almost nobody tells you: Guanacaste peaks when Quepos slows down. From May through August the sailfish numbers here are the best in the country, and June through August is the blue and black marlin window. December through April, the months everyone assumes are best, are actually the weakest offshore up here, because the Papagayo winds blow twenty to thirty miles an hour most days and push the warm water south.

So the honest advice is seasonal. Coming in January or February, fish out of Quepos. Coming in June or July, fish here. If you are already in Guanacaste during the windy months, the inshore fishing stays good: roosterfish along the rocky points year round, plus cubera snapper, grouper, jack crevalle and amberjack.

We track 14 operations working this coast. Fishing grounds sit sixteen to thirty miles out, and a typical offshore day out of Flamingo raises five to ten sailfish along with marlin and tuna.

One practical difference from Quepos. Marina Flamingo is the only real charter marina in Guanacaste, so it is the only place you walk down a dock and step aboard. Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Potrero and Ocotal are beach or mooring departures, which means boarding a tender through the surf. Worth knowing if you are bringing grandparents, small kids, or anyone with a bad knee.

Before you book, one honest note. Prices, departure times, and what is included move with the season here. Boats come out of the water for maintenance and operators adjust rates without telling anyone first. The details on this page are what we last confirmed with the operator, and we go back and check them, but your booking is with them and their confirmation is the final word. If a detail matters to your trip, ask us before you book and we will confirm it directly rather than guess.

Common questions

When is the best time to fish Guanacaste?

May through August. Sailfish numbers peak, the marlin show up from June, and the Papagayo winds that blow through the dry season have gone. This is the opposite of the central Pacific, where December to April is the peak.

Is fishing any good in the windy months?

Offshore, it is inconsistent from December through March, and a booked day may get moved inshore. Inshore fishing stays good throughout: roosterfish, snapper, grouper and jack along the rocky points. Calm windows of up to ten days do happen, so it is worth asking us what the forecast looks like before you write the trip off.

Do the boats leave from a marina or the beach?

Marina Flamingo is a proper marina with floating docks, so you walk aboard. Playas del Coco and Tamarindo boats moor off the beach and you board by tender, which can mean wet feet and a short scramble.

How does this compare to Quepos for billfish?

Quepos and Los Sueños are the bigger tournament scenes and hold the title for dry-season billfish. Guanacaste is the light-tackle and second-season destination, and in the middle of the year it is the better call of the two.
