Costa Rica, zone by zone

Eleven places, and the honest differences between them

Most Costa Rica guides describe every town the same way. These do not. We live on the Central Pacific, we send people to these places every week, and each page below says what a zone is genuinely good at, what it is not, and who should skip it.

If you are still deciding, the short version: Manuel Antonio for wildlife with comfort, Quepos for fishing and value, Jaco for a short trip near the airport, Dominical and Uvita for a quieter coast, Golfo Dulce if you want somewhere almost nobody goes, and Playa Flamingo for a quiet Guanacaste beach with a marina, an hour from Liberia airport. Santa Teresa is the surf town on the Nicoya Peninsula, a small plane or a ferry away. Arenal and Monteverde are the inland pair that most first itineraries add, and Río Celeste is the day trip from Guanacaste or the stop between Arenal and the beach.

Putting a route together

The order matters more than people expect. Do not raft the day you land. The national park is closed on Tuesdays. Whale season runs July to October and again December to March, so the same week is either the highlight of the trip or not an option at all. That sequencing is most of what a consultant is for, and it costs you nothing.
