Isla Damas mangrove estuary boat tour from Jaco

The easiest wildlife day on this coast, with a longer ride to get there

From the Jacó side this is a six-hour day rather than the four it takes from Manuel Antonio, and the extra time is all road. Pickup covers hotels in Jacó, Herradura, Los Sueños, and Esterillos, then you run south down the coast highway to the estuary outside Quepos. Once you are on the boat nothing about the trip is strenuous, so the drive is genuinely the most demanding part of the day, which is not something we can say about many tours.

The Damas estuary is a sanctuary of canals and natural mangrove tunnels, and a boat handles it comfortably: no paddling, no technique to learn, and both hands free for a camera. Your guide works the banks and branches as you go, picking out reptiles, anteaters, and monkeys that most passengers would glide straight past. Birders tend to do well here, with herons, kingfishers, ospreys, and frigatebirds among the regulars.

Difficulty is rated easy and the operator recommends the trip for families and anyone who would rather watch than work. No experience is needed. Lunch is included and served before or after the boat depending on the water.

Departure times follow the tide table rather than a fixed clock, so we confirm your start time for your specific date once you book. Travellers based in Manuel Antonio or Quepos should take the shorter, cheaper local departure instead: Isla Damas boat tour from Manuel Antonio.

Before you book, one honest note. Prices, departure times, and what is included move with the season here. Rivers rise and drop, tides reset the schedule, boats come out of the water for maintenance, and operators adjust rates without telling anyone first. The details on this page are what we last confirmed directly with the operator, and we go back and check them, but your booking is with the operator and their confirmation is the final word on price, timing, pickup, and what you get. If a detail matters to your trip, whether that is a dietary need, a mobility question, a birthday, or a tight flight, ask us before you book and we will confirm it with them directly rather than guess.
