Carara is where Costa Rica's dry northern forest hands off to the wet southern rainforest, and that overlap packs roughly 48 percent of the country's bird species into one park. The headline act is the scarlet macaw: pairs and small squadrons of red, blue, and yellow crossing above the canopy. Your bilingual naturalist leads the two-mile hike and picks out what most visitors walk straight past: aracaris, toucans, trogons, herons, egrets, tinamous, and vultures.
A 20-minute stop at an observatory along the trail gives you time to rest and work the camera. The Tarcoles river marks the park's northern boundary, and the bridge across it is the safe way to look down on the largest crocodile population in the country. If you depart from Manuel Antonio, the morning ends with a home-style lunch at the base camp before the ride back.
Both departures leave at 7:30 am, when the birds are busiest. From Manuel Antonio it is a six-hour day with lunch included. From Jaco the park is much closer, so the trip runs four hours with beverages and snacks instead of lunch.
