The Damas estuary near Quepos is a web of brackish channels where mangrove branches close overhead into natural tunnels. A kayak is the right vehicle for it: no engine noise, no wake, and a seat at water level where the wildlife actually is. Your bilingual guide reads the channels and points out what you would otherwise miss, from herons, kingfishers, ospreys, and frigatebirds to white-faced monkeys, anteaters, and reptiles along the banks.
The paddling itself is gentle. The current does much of the work, single and tandem kayaks are both available, and no previous experience is required. Children as young as eight can join. As you work through the channels you catch glimpses of Damas Island itself between the roots.
One thing to know before you book: this tour runs on the tide table, not the clock. Start times are set by the day's tides, and lunch is served before or after the paddle depending on when the water lets you in. Build some flexibility into your day and the estuary rewards it.
Bring sunscreen, sunglasses with a retainer cord, a waterproof camera, a hat, mosquito repellent, and a beach towel. Start times depend on the tides and are confirmed when you book. Children must be at least eight years old.
Before you book, one honest note. Prices, departure times, and what is included move with the season here. Rivers rise and drop, tides reset the schedule, boats come out of the water for maintenance, and operators adjust rates without telling anyone first. The details on this page are what we last confirmed directly with the operator, and we go back and check them, but your booking is with the operator and their confirmation is the final word on price, timing, pickup, and what you get. If a detail matters to your trip, whether that is a dietary need, a mobility question, a birthday, or a tight flight, ask us before you book and we will confirm it with them directly rather than guess.
Traveling with kids, limited mobility, or a tight schedule? Tell us your situation and we will match you to the right day and departure.
