Most of the jungle's residents sleep through your daytime hike. After sunset the cast changes completely: tree frogs climb out onto the stems, snakes and lizards start to move, spiders take up positions on their webs, and if you are lucky a sloth crosses the beam of your flashlight. On this two-hour guided walk, a certified naturalist points out what is moving in the dark and explains the habits that keep each animal alive out there.
The walk happens at Sukia Park, a private reserve in Manuel Antonio. Earlier versions of this tour ran on trails near the national park; the move to a private property means a quieter setting, controlled access, and more dependable wildlife sightings. At some point your guide will have everyone switch off their lights and just listen. The layered chorus of frogs, insects, and rustling leaves is the part people talk about afterward.
This one works for families. The trail is easy, kids of all ages are welcome, and children age three and under join free. Pickup from Manuel Antonio hotels is at 5:00 pm, and the full outing runs about three hours door to door.
