This one starts with real work. You paddle a little over an hour along the Manuel Antonio coastline, past tiny islands where marine birds nest, with the rainforest ridgeline on your left the whole way. The destination is Biesanz Bay, a sheltered inlet tucked out of sight of the main beaches, where you rest, eat a snack, and get in the water.
The snorkeling stop runs about 30 minutes. Visibility varies with the season, and on a good day you can spot parrotfish, starfish, angelfish, and sometimes a sea turtle. The paddle back to the pier is its own wildlife watch: pelicans, flying fish, and whatever else the Pacific decides to show you. Back at base camp the day ends with a homemade meal and some conversation.
No previous experience is required, and sea kayaking is more forgiving than river kayaking, but the operator rates the difficulty high, so come ready to actually paddle. Kayaks seat one or two, and children must be at least eight years old. Departures run at 8:00 am and 1:30 pm, with morning departures only from May through November because of afternoon weather.
