Arenal was one of the most active volcanoes on earth for decades and has been quiet since 2010. The summit is off limits, but the trails around its base cross old lava fields from past eruptions, including the 1968 and 1992 flows, with views of the cone when the clouds cooperate.
The national park is the simple version: buy your entry online, walk the trails at your own pace, and be back in town for lunch. A guided hike costs more and earns it. A naturalist reads the forest growing back over the lava, spots the birds and animals you would walk past, and knows which lookout has the clearest view that morning.
Our favorite for families is the half day that ends in a hot river: a guided volcano walk, a typical lunch, then a soak in a free, naturally heated stream. It is the cheapest way to get the volcano and the hot water into one day.
What to bring. Closed walking shoes, a rain jacket, sun protection, and water. Add a swimsuit and towel if your day ends at the hot river.
Before you book, one honest note. These prices are each operator's own published rates, which we last checked in October 2026, and they move with the season. We book this with a local operator we trust, and their confirmation is the final word on price, timing, pickup, and what you get. If a detail matters to your trip, whether that is a dietary need, a mobility question, a birthday, or a tight flight, ask us before you book and we will confirm it with them directly rather than guess.
Photos show the Arenal area, not a specific operator.
