Carara sits just north of Herradura off the coast highway, which makes it the nearest national park to Jaco and the shortest guided park day we sell here: four hours, $95, pickup at 7:30 am, back in town in time for lunch. Travelers coming up from Manuel Antonio pay $119 for the same trail because they spend two more hours in the van.
The park is where the dry forest of the north hands off to the wet forest of the south, and that seam holds roughly 48 percent of Costa Rica's bird species. Scarlet macaws are the reason most people come: pairs and small squadrons of red, blue, and yellow crossing above the canopy. Your bilingual naturalist runs the two-mile hike and calls out the aracaris, toucans, herons, egrets, tinamous, and vultures that most visitors walk straight past, with a 20-minute observatory stop partway for photos and a breather. The Tarcoles river marks the northern boundary, and the bridge over it is the safe place to look down on the largest crocodile population in the country.
Because the hike wraps by early afternoon, it slots around a surf morning, a checkout day, or an afternoon flight. Beverages and snacks come along, but the Jaco departure has no lunch stop, so plan on eating back in town. Staying in Manuel Antonio or Quepos? Book the six-hour departure from Manuel Antonio, which adds a home-style lunch at the base camp.
Bring suntan lotion, sunglasses, a hat or visor, mosquito repellent, hiking shoes, and a camera. Pickup at 7:30 am. Lunch is not included on the Jaco departure.
