Damas Island mangrove estuary kayak tour from Jaco

Six hours from Jacó, and two of them are the drive

Staying in Jacó does not put the Damas estuary out of reach, it just makes for a longer day. This departure runs six hours door to door against four from Manuel Antonio, and the difference is road time in both directions: pickup at your hotel in Jacó, Herradura, Los Sueños, or Esterillos, then the coast highway south past Playa Hermosa and the palm country around Parrita before you reach the water outside Quepos. The drive is worth staying awake for.

The estuary itself is brackish water threaded with mangrove channels, and in places the branches close overhead into tunnels. A kayak is the right vehicle for that: no engine, no wake, and a seat at water level where the animals actually are. Your bilingual guide reads the channels and calls out herons, kingfishers, ospreys, and frigatebirds, along with white-faced monkeys, anteaters, and reptiles on the banks. Damas Island shows up in the gaps between the roots as you pass.

Paddling is rated moderate and no previous experience is needed. Kayaks come in one and two-seat versions, children need to be at least eight years old, and the current does a fair share of the work. Lunch is included, served before or after the paddle depending on when the tide lets you in.

That tide is the one scheduling catch. Start times are set by the day's tides rather than published in advance, we confirm yours when you book, and from Jacó an early tide means an early alarm. If you are staying in Manuel Antonio or Quepos instead, book the shorter four-hour version: Damas Island kayak tour from Manuel Antonio.

Before you book, one honest note. Prices, departure times, and what is included move with the season here. Rivers rise and drop, tides reset the schedule, boats come out of the water for maintenance, and operators adjust rates without telling anyone first. The details on this page are what we last confirmed directly with the operator, and we go back and check them, but your booking is with the operator and their confirmation is the final word on price, timing, pickup, and what you get. If a detail matters to your trip, whether that is a dietary need, a mobility question, a birthday, or a tight flight, ask us before you book and we will confirm it with them directly rather than guess.
