Cacao, vanilla, and coffee all grow on the same private ranch in Londres, a farming town in the hills behind Manuel Antonio. On this five hour visit you walk the organic garden with a naturalist guide and follow each crop from plant to finished product: how a cacao pod becomes chocolate, why real vanilla is one of the most labor-intensive crops on earth (each orchid flower is pollinated by hand), and what happens to a coffee cherry between the hillside and your cup. There is plenty to taste along the way.
The farm is a working one, so expect company: rabbits, goats, ponies, horses, sheep, and chickens all live here, and you will meet them between stops. The visit ends with lunch at the ranch, cooked with organic produce grown on the property.
Morning and afternoon departures run daily at 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. The walking is moderate, on farm paths rather than paved trails, so closed shoes and long pants make the morning easier. If you want to double up on farm time, the same ranch runs the Local flavor cooking experience and jungle horseback rides.
