Río Celeste is the river in Tenorio Volcano National Park that runs a startling sky blue, the result of minerals in the water. The trail takes in the waterfall, a lookout, a blue lagoon, bubbling springs, and the spot where the two streams meet and the color appears.
It is about an hour and a half to two hours' drive from La Fortuna each way, which is why we book it as a guided day with hotel pickup and lunch rather than send you on your own. The walk is about six kilometers round trip on forest trail, and the park caps entry at 1,200 people a day, so tickets are sold online only and it pays to buy ahead.
Swimming in the river is not allowed, so leave the swimsuit at the house and bring the camera.
What to bring. Walking shoes with grip (the trail gets muddy), a rain jacket, insect repellent, water, and a dry shirt for the drive back.
Before you book, one honest note. These prices are each operator's own published rates, which we last checked in October 2026, and they move with the season. We book this with a local operator we trust, and their confirmation is the final word on price, timing, pickup, and what you get. If a detail matters to your trip, whether that is a dietary need, a mobility question, a birthday, or a tight flight, ask us before you book and we will confirm it with them directly rather than guess.
