Venado Caves

The Arenal day most visitors never hear about

The Venado Caves are a cave system in the countryside outside La Fortuna, and visiting them is properly muddy. You get wet, you get dirty, and in places you crawl, with a guide ahead of you and a headlamp on. It is the wild card we suggest to families with active kids and to teenagers who think they have seen it all.

The tour takes about two hours, with departures at 8 am, 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm. Rubber boots, a helmet, and a headlamp are included. There is one tight section, and it is optional: anyone who would rather not squeeze through takes the way around.

The cave operator does not run transport, so we pair the visit with a private driver. Private tours run at any time on request, and the site has its own restaurant and pool for afterwards.

Ways to do it

  • Guided cave tour: From $35 adult. About two hours, from age 5. A child rate exists for ages 5 to 10; we confirm it with your request.
  • Private cave tour: On request. Your group only, at a time that suits you.

What to bring. Clothes you do not mind ruining, a full change of clothes, a towel, and a plastic bag for the wet things. Leave jewelry and anything precious behind.

Good to know

  • Not for anyone uneasy in tight or dark spaces, even with the optional section skipped.
  • Transport is extra; we quote the driver with the tour.

Before you book, one honest note. These prices are each operator's own published rates, which we last checked in October 2026, and they move with the season. We book this with a local operator we trust, and their confirmation is the final word on price, timing, pickup, and what you get. If a detail matters to your trip, whether that is a dietary need, a mobility question, a birthday, or a tight flight, ask us before you book and we will confirm it with them directly rather than guess.
