The Balsa River is the rafting run from La Fortuna: class II and III rapids, which means plenty of splash and steady action without the big drops of a class IV river. It suits first-timers, teenagers, and fit families with kids eight and over.
The day runs about five hours including the drive, the safety talk, and the time on the water, and hotel pickup in La Fortuna is part of it. The operator we would book has been running rivers here since 1993.
If your group wants the river without the rapids, ask us about a calm safari float instead: same rainforest, slower water, and a better chance to watch the banks for wildlife.
What to bring. Swimsuit or quick-dry clothes, water shoes or sandals with a back strap, sunscreen, and a dry change of clothes for the ride back.
Before you book, one honest note. These prices are each operator's own published rates, which we last checked in October 2026, and they move with the season. We book this with a local operator we trust, and their confirmation is the final word on price, timing, pickup, and what you get. If a detail matters to your trip, whether that is a dietary need, a mobility question, a birthday, or a tight flight, ask us before you book and we will confirm it with them directly rather than guess.
