Sunset deck with a round lounger looking over the jungle to the Pacific (MAE-04)
Manuel Antonio, rainforest hillside

Seven-bedroom ocean view villa with two pools and an elevator

Five levels in the canopy, with an elevator between them

MAE-04 climbs a rainforest hillside in Manuel Antonio across five levels and about 6,000 square feet, looking out over the treetops to the coast of the national park. A private elevator runs between the levels, so getting from a bedroom to the pool or the great room does not mean a run of stairs. That makes it one of the easier big houses here for grandparents and mixed-age groups.

The heart of the house is an open-air great room under a bamboo and timber roof, open on three sides to the breeze, so it has no air conditioning and does not need it. The lounge, dining table, and kitchen all sit on this level with the view. Monkeys move through the trees at eye level, and toucans, macaws, and hummingbirds come past often. A newer wing adds a second living room that is air conditioned, walled in floor-to-ceiling glass under a vaulted ceiling, with a big TV, a wet bar, and a half bath, and its own ocean view pool right outside the glass. There is covered parking beside it.

The main pool is long enough for laps and has a 20-foot waterfall falling into it. Across the water is a pool house with a lounge, a wet bar, and daybeds that convert for sleeping, and below it are two air conditioned bedrooms with open-air showers. The primary suite has a level to itself, with a king bed, a sitting area, a stone bath with a double shower, and a wraparound balcony over the jungle. The other bedrooms are spread across the levels below, each with its own bathroom.

Beds, as the managers list them: the primary suite has a king. Three more bedrooms have a king each, and one of those can take an extra single. One bedroom has a queen, with room for an extra single. The pool house bedroom has two singles that join into a king, plus room for an extra single, and the last bedroom has two singles that join into a king. Bedrooms you do not book stay closed, so the house is never shared with another group.
