A glass-walled villa at dusk above the rainforest in Portasol, on the coast between Quepos and Dominical
Portasol, Portalón, Quepos

Five-bedroom ocean view villa with infinity pool

Glass walls, jungle on every side

This is a modern architectural house set high in Portasol, a 540-hectare gated rainforest community above Portalón, on the quiet stretch of coast between Quepos and Dominical. Floor-to-ceiling glass runs across the living and dining areas, so the rainforest is not something you look at from a window, it is the wall. The Pacific shows through the canopy beyond, and the whole house faces the sunset.

Five bedrooms and five bathrooms, three of them en suite, with a private patio off four of the five bedrooms. The saltwater infinity pool runs to an edge over the treeline. Above the top floor, an open-air terrace is set up for sunsets, stargazing and yoga. A separate building next to the house holds a full-size pool table, a big television, its own bathroom, and two desks with large monitors for anyone who has to check in with work.

Two practical things worth knowing before you fall for it. Four-wheel drive is required to reach the house, with no exceptions, so this is a villa for a group that either rents properly or lets us drive them. And it is a genuine jungle house: monkeys and birds start early, which is why every bedroom has eye masks and earplugs. Portasol's own waterfall, La Cazuela, is inside the community rather than a day trip away, with two natural swimming holes below it.

The house comes with a full-time concierge team who live on this coast and are bilingual in Spanish and English. Their chef cooks private dinners at the house for an added fee, and daily housekeeping can be added with a day's notice.
